Decoding verbal working memory representations of Chinese characters from Broca's area

چکیده
Representations of sensory working memory can be found across the entire neocortex. But how are verbal (VWM) contents retained in human brain? Here we used fMRI and multi-voxel pattern analyses to study Chinese native speakers (15 males, 13 females) memorizing characters. characters uniquely suitable VWM because encoding is encouraged by their complex visual appearance monosyllabic pronunciation. We that activity patterns Broca's area left premotor cortex carried information about memorized These language-related areas (1) significantly more cued than those not for memorization, (2) on right hemisphere (3) symbols which hard verbalize. In contrast, early carries a comparable amount uncued stimuli thus unlikely involved retention. This provides evidence maintenance distributed network brain regions, consistent with accounts WM. The results also suggest form articulatory serves rehearsal retention contents.

Functional heterogeneity within Broca's area during verbal working memory.
In previous fMRI research, we found that two subregions of the left inferior frontal cortex showed distinct patterns of activity during a verbal working memory task. Specifically, a more dorsal region tracked with performance, while a more ventral region was sensitive to lexical status. To test the veracity of this finding, we developed a new method for meta-analysis of neuroimaging results. In...
متن کاملLearning Chinese Word Representations From Glyphs Of Characters
In this paper, we propose new methods to learn Chinese word representations. Chinese characters are composed of graphical components, which carry rich semantics. It is common for a Chinese learner to comprehend the meaning of a word from these graphical components. As a result, we propose models that enhance word representations by character glyphs. The character glyph features are directly lea...
متن کاملVerbal Memory and Working Memory Impairment in Healthy Siblings of Patients with Schizophrenia
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the verbal memory and working memory impairment in healthy siblings of patients with schizophrenia. Methods: The purpose of this study was to compare cognitive deficits in siblings of the patients with schizophrenia and control group. A total of 35 unaffected siblings of patients with schizophrenia were selected from the relatives of the pat...
متن کاملComponents of verbal working memory: evidence from neuroimaging.
We review research on the neural bases of verbal working memory, focusing on human neuroimaging studies. We first consider experiments that indicate that verbal working memory is composed of multiple components. One component involves the subvocal rehearsal of phonological information and is neurally implemented by left-hemisphere speech areas, including Broca's area, the premotor area, and the...
متن کاملVerbal and visual subsystems of working memory.
Two recent PET scanning studies have revealed the anatomical basis of the verbal and visual subsystems of working memory. The term 'working memory' refers to the system responsible for the temporary maintenance of information~nec-essary for performing such cognitive tasks as reasoning, understanding and learning. Evidence from a range of studies based on the functioning of working memory in nor...
